Katarina Witt started skating at age five. Her talent soon became obvious as she enrolled to a special school for children with a talent to play sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. At this school she met her coach Jutta Muler. Witt had her first breakthrough season in 1982 when she came second in the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Her elegance and grace caught the attention of everyone immediately, and from that point forward she began to dominate the competition. Olympic Erfolg at Sarajevo, at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal in figure skating for women following a heatedly-contested competition. The winner of the competition was a more competitive race after four years. The free skater was unable to win however, she took home the gold medal for her figures that were compulsory and the short program. Witt was the only woman ever since Sonja Haenie to win the winner of a second time in figure skating. Hall of Fame Witt, who was a star in the film industry acting, then returned to figure skating to compete at Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. People were captivated by her, despite the fact that she finished seventh. In 1995, Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
